Joe Root says he wants to remain England’s captain despite presiding over a humiliating four-nil loss in the Ashes. England ended a humiliating tour on the third evening in Hobart, losing 10 for 56.

Root believes that he is the man to lead the Renaissance. Who should give a chance and see? He admitted that it was not his decision to continue as captain. But reiterating his comments earlier in the series that he still has drive and inspiration.

“I believe I am the right person to take this team forward,” Root said. “I have an appetite to move on and turn things around.

“At the moment we are going through our race. And the performance has not been very good. But I should try to change things that I would like the opportunity here and have to start from one show for our English Test team.

There are many reasons for the decline of England as a Test team in the last year. And one win in his last 13 Tests proves that this fall can’t all put them in front of Root.

Root had to face this continuous defeat. He does not mean that Root is a helpless captain. He has qualities as a leader that are probably lost in the Test cricket results business. His human-management skills are well regarded by many who work with him and have been a particular strength during the pandemic.

Last year he led from the front with the bat, keeping his team together on several occasions. There are also signs he is becoming tougher and more demanding, publicly calling on the ECB to focus more on Test cricket. Still, the fact that Root’s work as a captain is a work in progress after being in charge for so long is clearly an issue.
