Jonny Bairstow saved England’s blush and saved his Test career with a stellar SCG century, helping his country avoid a follow-on for 4 for 36 due to an Australian barrage on the third day.
Bairstow’s century was both brave and opportunityless. He struck Pat Cummins’ thumb in the afternoon, leaving him doubly in pain. But he scored his second century in Australia and his seventh in Test cricket. It was his first innings in three years and 38 Test innings.

As the England team and fans stood up and praised a rare show of fighting on this tour, he walked around the rooms in an emotional occasion, bringing it up with a dazzling cut-over backward point in the last over of the day.
He was highly endorsed by Ben Stokes, who scored a crucial 66 in the century stand with Jonny Bairstow, while Mark Wood scored an excellent 39.
It was an unusual day. Two hours were lost to rain and England went 70 balls without scoring a run and lost three wickets in the process. Australia dropped three catches, Stokes was bowled without the bails and Scott Boland took 2 for 0 before injuring his side – he went in for a scan and was later free from injury.
Australia produced their highest four hours of the series as Bairstow picked them up with superior footwork and positive intent to leave England 158 runs behind in the first innings with three wickets and two days left.
After his summit order literally stalled in the morning, he never let Australia settle. He constantly went on the front and back feet but didn’t make the effort and overhit the ball on a surface that made all kinds of moves.
Stokes combined brilliantly with Jonny Bairstow as the pair batted mid-season and put together England’s third-highest partnership of the series.
It was also the fifth time in Test cricket that England’s fifth-wicket pair had made a century partnership after coming up with a score of 40 or less. Stokes has been involved in three of these
Stokes had good luck. He offered Pat Cummins an early life but the Australia captain missed the opportunity for a quick comeback. He also survived one of the most bizarre occasions in the series.
Australia appealed thinking it hit the back pad and was dismissed lbw by umpire Paul Reiffel. Ben reviewed and his pad was nowhere near the ball.
He laughed with the Australians when replays showed he had dodged the stumps without removing the bail to turn Green off the wicket.
He was then hyper-aggressive around the crease to commit Australia’s lines and length. He was clearly in pain with every stroke, leaving a bruise on his injured side, but he left Australia stunned.

He hit three consecutive fours off Mitchell Starc and played a defiant cover drive for six off Lyon after being beaten in the flight. But Lyon takes his revenge after being beaten up by Ben and Johnny on either side of the tea. Stokes played back for one that was slammed on the straight and got struck plumb in front.
Jos Buttler humbly hits a cover for a cover shortly after but Mark Wood picks up the slack. He was done enough with short balls, but he scored 39 off 41, which included three high sixes.
