Netherlands coach Ryan Campbell suffers heart attack and is in ICU

Netherlands coach and former Australia wicketkeeper Ryan Campbell is in the ICU of a UK hospital after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.

The 50-year-old was at the playground with his children over the weekend when he collapsed. The news was first disclosed by Gareth Parker, an Australian journalist and close aide of Campbell.

Campbell was traveling to Europe from the Netherlands team’s tour of New Zealand

Campbell was traveling to Europe from the Netherlands team’s tour of New Zealand, and had just been visiting friends including Parker and extended family in his home city of Perth a week earlier.

Ryan played two ODIs for Australia in 2002 on paternity leave in the absence of first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist.

He has coached the Dutch national team since 2017. And as a player has represented both Australia and Hong Kong at international level. He made an appearance for the latter in the 2016 Men’s T20 World Cup. Becoming the oldest player to make a T20I debut at the time, aged 44 years and 30 days.

During his 98-game first-class career between 1994 and 2006, Campbell scored 6009 runs for Western Australia at an average of 36.31.
