The ICC started the Cricket World Cup Super League for the 10-team tournament. Under this league, the teams who finished in top 8 in the points table of this league were directly entitled to qualify for the tournament. So far 7 teams had been finalized and the fate of the eighth team depended on the Ireland vs Bangladesh ODI series.

If Ireland had won all three matches of the series, Ireland would have been the eighth team to gain automatic qualification for the tournament, but South Africa would have had the chance if even one match had gone against them. That’s what happened.
