PCB appoints advisors for chief selector

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday confirmed the appointment of former cricketers Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, and Salman Butt as advisory members to newly appointed chief selector Wahab Riaz.

Riaz and his advisors will play their role in the five-match T20 series against New Zealand

The PCB confirmed in a press release that all three members will take up their roles with immediate effect. Their first assignment will be the five-match T20 series against New Zealand.

“The PCB has confirmed the appointment of former Pakistan cricketers Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, and Salman Butt as advisory members to chief selector Wahab Riaz,” the cricket board said in a brief statement.

“All three have assumed their responsibilities in the selection panel with immediate effect. Their first assignment as advisory members to the chief selector includes the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. This schedule start on January 12, 2024, after the conclusion of Australia’s Test tour.

Kamran Akmal won the T20 World Cup at Lord’s in 2009

Kamran Akmal was part of the Pakistani team that won the T20 World Cup at Lord’s in 2009. The Wicketkeeper batsman represented the Green Shirts in 268 international matches. He scored 6,871 runs across all formats with 11 centuries and 27 half-centuries.

Salman Butt wore Pakistan jersey in 135 international matches

Salman Butt wore the Pakistan jersey in 135 international matches. The former left-handed opener scored 5,209 runs across all formats with 11 centuries and 27 50s.

Rao Iftikhar’s career was short

Rao Iftikhar’s career with Pakistan was short. The right-arm medium pacer played only 65 international matches for his country. He managed to take 78 wickets across all formats.

PCB made many major changes in the management as well as The team since November.

It all started on November 15, when Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy in all formats after a meeting with PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf, as he was only offered to retain the Test captaincy.

Soon after his resignation, the PCB announced new captains for Test and T20I cricket, with Shan Masood and Shaheen Afridi taking charge of the respective formats.

The PCB then appointed former cricketer Mohammad Hafeez as the team director, while Wahab Riaz assumed the role of chief selector.

Another former fast bowler Sohail Tanvir was named head of the junior selection committee, while batting great Mohammad Yousuf was given the responsibility of coaching the Pakistan U19 team.
