Pollard – “A Very, Very Sad Day” for West Indies Cricket

West Indies captain Kieron Pollard said a series loss at the hands of Ireland is difficult for the home team to accept. The fifties from Andy McBrine and Harry Tector helped Ireland beat West Indies by two wickets in the third ODI on Sunday. With this win, Ireland registered their first ODI series win at home away from an ICC full member after registering a two-wicket win over West Indies in the final match of the series.

Pollard said it was a sad day for West Indies cricket, having lost the match and series against Ireland.

The 2–1 ODI series defeat at home to Ireland marked “a very sad day” for West Indies cricket according to Kieron Pollard.

Pollard said-

“Of course, it’s no secret. Disappointed with the way we played. Disappointed with the way we battled throughout the series. That’s the main reason we stumbled,” Pollard said. “We weren’t able to score enough runs on the board. In a game where we scored 269, we were able to cross the line. But 229 and 212 is completely unacceptable at this international level.”

“I think it’s a combination of everything. I think, overall, I think we have a batting problem, as you mentioned – mentally, technically, of conditions, of circumstances. Right. An hour is needed to be able to assess the shot and be able to play,” he said. “Again, as I’ve said, it’s not just 11 people or 15 people, it’s all around the Caribbean, and we continue to reward the guy who goes to the Super 50 and scores a few hundred. There are runs and so, you know, he has to play, or he has to come into the team.

“The guys are trying to get better, and it won’t happen overnight and it’s not gloom or doom and it’s a matter of putting our heads together, so we really need to sit down and think deeply about where we need to take the West Indies cricket forward,” said Pollard.

West Indies had won the first ODI but Ireland came back strongly to register back-to-back wins.
