Australia suffered an injury on the eve of the second ODI against India at Mackay when Rachael Haynes suffered a painful blow to the elbow during the net session.
Cricket Australia footage showed vice-captain Rachael Haynes. He scored an unbeaten 93 in the opening match of the series, passing 2000 ODI runs. Moments after the shock the pain subsided before leaving the net and was later sent for a scan. .
Australia have suffered a number of injuries to contend with this series, with Jess Jonassen unavailable and Tyla Vlaminck not being considered until the T20Is after suffering an Achilles problem. All-rounder Nicola Carey was also unavailable for the opening game due to an abdominal strain.
However, the vacancies that have cropped up in the XI, with a larger squad necessitated by Covid-19, are giving Matthew Mott and Meg Lanning a chance to assess the depth available ahead of next year’s World Cup.
It was on display in the first match when Darcy Brown and debutant Hannah Darlington shared six wickets. With Mott being mindful of the workload on young fast bowlers during multi-format series, there is a chance that other uncapped pacers, Stella Campbell and Matlen Brown, will also come to mind.
“Think this is the greatest team I’ve been a part of,” said spinner Sophie Molyneux, “and a lot of those youngsters are fast.” So it’s been great in the nets facing them all. They’re all really excited, and they’ve been given the reins to reprimand and bowl short and try to intimidate the opposition batsmen. Which is great for women’s cricket. The way the girls have attacked is very good.
Rachael Haynes has played every match for Australia’s world-record 25-game unbeaten run in ODIs. And have not lost a single match in the format since the 2017 World Cup. Shouldn’t she be available for Friday’s clash. This will require adjustments in the batting order. The most obvious solution would be for Beth Mooney to open with Alyssa Healy as she does in T20Is. Although uncapped Georgia Redmayne might be another option.
Molyneux himself returned to the ODI squad on Tuesday to fill the gap left in Jonassen‘s absence. Due to not being able to make his place in the XI on the tour of New Zealand earlier this year. She took 2 for 39, including the crucial wicket of Mithali Raj. Which was his seventh ODI since making his debut in 2018 and has enjoyed the ability to spend time working on the batsmen allowed in 50-over cricket.
Rachael Haynes said, “Think one-day cricket kills everything. You can set up the batsmen. And give a little more time instead of frantic T20s,” she said. “I really enjoy being able to bowl a couple of overs to the same batsman. It definitely suits our team. One-day cricket, the skill of every player is more on show.”
