Punjab had scored 162 runs in the first innings. At the same time, the Railway team was dismissed after scoring 150 runs in the first innings. Punjab got a lead of 12 runs in the first innings.

The decision to move the match to the new pitch was taken during the drinks break in the second session after lunch. On-field umpires Madangopal and Rajeev Godara discussed the matter with match referee Yuraj Singh and also with the two captains Mandeep Singh of Punjab and Karn Sharma of Railways.
