Rohan Gavaskar: Pakistan captain Babar Azam is currently counted among the best batsmen in the world. Babar Azam, however, has been a victim of criticism for his defensive approach for some time now. Former Team India cricketer Rohan Gavaskar has said that Babar is a very strong batsman, but sometimes he becomes defensive due to fear of failure.

This is what Rohan Gavaskar said about Babar Azam on Sports 18 :-

Rohan Gavaskar said on Sports 18, ‘To call him a one-dimensional player will be a bit harsh. He is a quality player. If you look at the numbers, then it is understood that he is not a one-dimensional player. The fact is that he knows how to change gears.

Rohan Gavaskar, “The fear of failure makes Babar Azam defensive”

You look at his numbers in the first and second innings. His strike rate is around 125 in the first innings and it is 137 in the second innings. It shows that he knows how to change gears.

The pressure of staying on the crease for a long time makes Babar defensive :-

Rohan Gavaskar further said, ‘I think it is mental mindset, fear of failure and when I am saying fear of failure, it does not mean fear of failure. I could be wrong here, he thinks Pakistani batting revolves around him.

So when Azam bats first, he feels that he has to stay longer at the crease. Because if he fails then the team’s batting will fail and sometimes it affects the player.
