According to The Kathmandu Post, the Kathmandu District Court, through a single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal, ruled on January 10 that Nepal leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane will have to serve eight years in jail.
Apart from the punishment, a fine of Rs 3 lakh has also been imposed on the former Nepal captain and the victim was asked to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation.
Sandeep Lamichhane was accused of rape in September 2022 :-
In fact, in September 2022, the victim had filed a case against Sandeep Lamichhane, accusing him of rape. After months of trial and investigation, Lamichhane was finally convicted of the crime on December 29, 2023, and the degree of sentencing was finally announced on January 10, 2024.
There were many ups and downs in this case :-
The case took many twists and turns as initial claims that the victim was a minor at the time of the incident were rejected by the court. Meanwhile, Sandeep Lamichhane was arrested after returning from the 2022 Caribbean Premier League and following this Lamichhane moved the High Court challenging the district court.
Along with Nepal, Lamichhane also took part in the franchise league till 2023 :-
Trials and investigations continued but Lamichhane’s activities were banned. He was also barred from traveling abroad and had to inform the police in advance if he wanted to go out of Kathmandu.
However, there was temporary relief for Lamichhane as the Supreme Court ruled in the cricketer’s favor regarding the sanctions. This meant that Lamichhane could continue playing cricket until the final decision and he had participated in the franchise league along with Nepal till 2023.
