The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab has made Indian cricketer Shubman Gill the ‘State Icon’ for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C said in a statement on Monday that Gill will be part of various campaigns aimed at creating awareness among voters so that the voting percentage crosses the 70 percent mark. Election officials have set a target of ‘crossing 70 this time’.
Sibin C said this about Shubman Gill :-
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, 65.96% votes were cast for 13 seats. Sibin said Gill, who hails from Punjab, is popular among sports lovers, especially the youth, and has been made a ‘state icon’ for the elections. Sibin C said that in a meeting with all the Deputy Commissioners of Punjab on Friday, February 16, they were asked to identify areas where the voting percentage was low during the last elections.

Punjabi singer Tarsem Jassar is also a ‘state icon’ :-
Sibin C further said that the awareness campaigns and appeals run by Gill in such areas will motivate voters and help in increasing the voting percentage. Earlier, popular Punjabi singer Tarsem Jassar was also selected as the ‘State Icon’ and will also be carrying out similar campaigns.
Lok Sabha elections likely to be held in April-May :-
The Chief Electoral Officer expressed hope that first-time voters would be influenced by Gill and Tarsem and exercise their franchise. He also appealed to people of other age groups to vote in large numbers. Lok Sabha elections are likely to be held in April-May.
