On the second day, playing ahead of the score of 298 runs for 5 wickets, the innings of the Australian team, which returned unbeaten on the first day, was carried forward by Steve Smith along with Alex Carey. Carey was dismissed after scoring 28 runs at 329. After this, Smith kept on holding one end and wickets kept falling from the other end. Australia’s team was piled up after scoring 364 runs. Smith returned to the pavilion unbeaten on 145. Debutant Prabhat Jayasuriya took 6 wickets for 118 runs for Sri Lanka. He was the most successful bowler of the team. Steve Smith, who completed his 28th Test century on Friday, faced 272 balls and hit 16 fours in his unbeaten 145.
Jayasuriya, who was included in the playing XI after several players were infected with the corona virus, became the sixth Sri Lankan bowler to take five or more wickets in a Test debut. He became the country’s second best bowler on debut after Pravin Jayawickrama (taking six for 92 against Bangladesh last year).

Jayasuriya broke the 77-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Smith by dismissing the previous day’s unbeaten batsman Alex Carey for 28 on Saturday morning and then completed five wickets by getting Mitchell Starc caught by Kusal Mendis. He took his sixth wicket with a leg before Nathan Lyon. The only pace bowler in the bowling attack, Kasun Rajita (2 for 70) dismissed skipper Pat Cummins, while Mahesh Teekshana (1 for 48) took his maiden Test wicket in Mitchell Swepson.

Sri Lanka did not start well after coming out to bat after Australia were bundled out for 364 runs in the first innings. Opener Pathum Nishanka was caught on the score of 12 by Cameron Green on the ball of Starc. After this, captain Dimuth Karunaratne shared a 152-run partnership with Kushal Mendis for the second wicket. But a few overs before the end of the day’s play, the sweepson broke the partnership by LBW to Karunaratne. Karunaratne scored 86 runs and missed out on completing his century. No more wickets fell after that. Kushal Mendis is unbeaten on 84 and Mathews 6 runs.
