SLC decided to suspend Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket, after being accused of rape

Gunathilaka Suspended: The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to suspend national player Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket with immediate effect. Mr. Gunathilaka has been arrested in Australia for sexually assaulting a woman, and after being charged will not be considered for selection in any format of cricket.

Allegations of rape and sexual abuse- his bail was rejected

Following his arrest in Melbourne, Sri Lanka Cricket has suspended him from all forms of cricket with immediate effect. He has been charged with rape and sexual abuse. On Monday, he appeared in court for a bail application. However, his bail was rejected by the Downing Center Local Court in Sydney. After that, the SLC has now launched an internal investigation.

Sri Lanka Cricket would like to emphasize that it adopts a “zero tolerance” policy for any such conduct by a player and will provide all necessary assistance to Australian law enforcement authorities to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident.

Gunathilaka’s troubled past:

• This is not the first time that Gunathilaka has come under scrutiny.
• In 2017, SLC suspended him for six games. He missed training and appeared for the match without any cricket gear.
• In 2018, one of his close friends was accused of raping a Norwegian woman in Colombo. The police questioned the cricketer in connection with the crime.
• In 2021, the SLC suspended him for a year for breaking the Covid-19 restrictions in England.
• While Gunathilaka was ruled out due to injury, the SLC wants to know why he was not sent back to Colombo.

According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald- Gunathilaka was handcuffed during the virtual hearing. And he was wearing a gray T-shirt, blue jeans, and a thong. His lawyer Anand Amarnath moved the bail application during the “closed court” hearing. But Magistrate Robert Williams refused to grant bail, the report said.
