Cameron Green is unlikely to play in the first Test against India in Nagpur from Thursday after he fractured his finger during the Boxing Day Test, which will take more time to heal.
Green did not bat during Australia’s first training session at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. He did some fitness work and bowled lightly centre-wicket, but Australia opted for a cautious approach to his recovery, as he had only had surgery to insert a pin in his finger five weeks earlier.
Before leaving for Nagpur, he had injured his finger while batting during the training camp in Bengaluru, and although it did not cause any damage, it was enough to alert the team management.
Australia’s vice-captain Steven Smith felt that Green was unlikely to play as he had not faced fast bowling in the nets. “I don’t think he’s [going to play],” Smith said. “I don’t think he has faced fast bowlers yet. So I can dare say he won’t but who knows. I’m not entirely sure. We’ll wait and see.” “But it’s unlikely, I think.”
This would mean Australia would pick a specialist batsman at No.6 and just four bowlers for the first Test.
