Sydney Thunder Foundation: Khawaja quits Thunder

Sydney Thunder Foundation player Usman Khawaja is out of the final year of his deal. He left the club due to family reasons.

The foundation player has one year left for Sydney Thunder to complete his contract, citing family reasons.

Terming it as the “toughest call as a cricketer”, Khawaja said that he wants to be with his wife Rachel in his hometown of Brisbane for the arrival of his second child.

Brisbane Heat declined to comment on whether they had spoken to Khawaja about signing for BBL 12.

The 35-year-old has been with the Thunder since the inception of the BBL in 2011. And he has scored 1818 runs in 59 matches.

Khawaja said, “I hate to talk about the decision I have taken… the toughest decision I have taken as a cricketer because Sydney Thunder, the players, the coaching and support staff, and the club’s supporters are my friends. It means a lot to him.” He has always described himself as a ‘proud Westie’, a statement said.

“However, it is for family reasons, and when I am leaving, the people who know me who feel a big part of my heart will always be with the Thunder.

“I don’t want people to think that I have broken my ties with Sydney Thunder because I will always care about the club, the players, the whole organization.
