Wasim, who turned 21 on Thursday, complained of lower back pain during a bowling session at the ICC Academy.
It is believed that his MRI scan has been done. Wasim has been a part of each of the team’s three training sessions since arriving in Dubai on Tuesday.
ESPNcricinfo understands that the scan is precautionary, the PCB does not want to risk potential long-term injury.
Given how much cricket they are prepared to play in the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November.
After the Asia Cup, Pakistan is set to play England in seven T20Is at home, followed by a tri-series in New Zealand.
before they leave for Australia. In the Asia Cup, they could possibly play five games in 12 days if they get a place in the Super Four stage.
Wasim has played 11 T20 Internationals so far since his debut against West Indies in July last year. He has taken 17 wickets at an average of 15.88 and an economy of 8.10.
Wasim was particularly impressive in the home series against Australia this March, where he took five wickets in three ODIs as Pakistan suffered a 1-0 loss to secure the series.
The fear of injury could be a matter of concern as the team management is already grappling with Afridi’s absence from the tournament.
Despite the injury, Afridi has been part of the traveling squad for four weeks and is currently undergoing rehabilitation on tour in the United Arab Emirates as Pakistan looks to make him fit for the T20 World Cup.
Afridi is working with fast bowling consultant Shaun Tait. Mohammad Hasnain had to make a late call to join the Asia Cup squad earlier due to his absence. Haris Rauf, Shahnawaz Dahani, and Naseem Shah are the other fast bowlers in the tour party.
Pakistan has roped in Umar Rashid as an assistant to Tait, the fast bowling coach for the Asia Cup, following a recommendation from head coach Saqlain Mushtaq.
Rashid, who has an impressive body of work at the National High-Performance Centre, has worked with all the current crop of fast bowlers around the national set-up at age-group levels.
