Former England captain Ted Dexter was one of England’s greatest ever cricketers. He has died aged 86. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) announced on Thursday. He has captained his country 30 times.
Dexter skippered England in 30 of his 62 Tests with the MCC commenting he had played “the game with the same sense of adventure and fun that captures much of the story of his remarkable life”.
“After a recent illness, he passed away peacefully in the Compton hospice in Wolverhampton at midday yesterday, surrounded by his family,” a statement read.
Ted was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather and one of England’s greatest ever cricketers,” said the MCC statement.
Dexter scored 4,502 runs at an average of 47.89 for England, including nine hundred, and took 66 wickets at 34.9.
His ability to dominate fast bowling was admirable and his superb batting against the West Indies and Australia teams is remembered by all. He also made legendary contributions. The games in various capacities post-retirement and helped develop the players’ rankings that are so popular today.
The West Indies at Lord’s in 1963 when he came in at 2-1 and smashed 70 off 75 deliveries.
Another player-turned-broadcaster, Mark Nicholas said- Ted Dexter has gone – boyhood hero, teacher, and dear friend. He was one of the great players and did as much or more than anyone to drag cricket into the modern age.
