Most controversial match in cricket history: The year 1980 and the 13th of February. The excitement of the Test match being played between West Indies and New Zealand at its peak. The Kiwi team needed 104 runs to win. The West Indies team was already shaken by poor umpiring in this match. However, the New Zealand batsmen were in awe of the balls coming at the pace of the Caribbean team’s dreaded fast bowlers.

The match was on an exciting turn. It was becoming very difficult to say in whose favor the victory would go. That’s why Michael Holding, known as ‘Whispering Death’, used to move towards the batsman with his long steps.

Holding’s pace ball takes the inside edge of John Parker’s bat and ends up in the keeper’s gloves. The entire West Indies team made a loud appeal in unison, but the umpires did not budge from the toss. After this, what happened on the field made this match one of the most controversial matches in the history of cricket.

The bowler had blown the stumps by kicking :-

Michael Holding was completely taken aback by the umpire’s decision to give him not out. The batsman is said to have taken off his batting gloves and started turning towards the pavilion, pressing the bat to the side. This was the reason why Holding was shocked by the umpire’s decision. The Caribbean bowler ran into his follow through and kicked the stumps away.

No player reached to receive the award :-

Due to Michael Holding’s behavior and poor umpiring, there was a lot of tension in this match between the players of West Indies and New Zealand team. The situation was such that the players of both the teams did not turn up to receive the award at the presentation after the match was over. Players of both West Indies and New Zealand had boycotted it.

West Indies wanted to leave the series :-

It is said that the West Indies team wanted to return home after this match, leaving the series in the middle. However, with a lot of effort, the board persuaded the players to play the remaining matches. New Zealand was successful in winning the Test match by one wicket. At the same time, the Kiwi team also captured the series 1-0.
