Tim Paine resigns as Australia captain

Tim Paine resigns as Australia captain, less than a month before the home Ashes, with Tim Paine immediately stepping down as effective captain – endorsed by Cricket Australia.

The Board accepts Paine’s resignation :-

Penn’s determination comes after an off-field scandal erupted where he sent candid messages to a female colleague in Cricket Tasmania in 2017. The board has accepted Paine’s resignation, and will now hope to determine a new Test captain.

CA President Richard Freudenstein said: “Tim felt that this decision to step down as captain was in the best interest of his family and Australian cricket.

“While the Board acknowledged that Tim was permitted by an investigation a few years ago for any breach of the Code of Conduct in relation to this subject, we respect his decision. CA does not accept such language or behavior. Don’t criticize.

“Besides his fault, Tim has been an exceptional leader since his appointment, and the Board thanks him for his distinguished service. Tim will be in receipt of selection in the Test squad during the Ashes summer.”

Penn released his resignation Friday at a news conference in Hobart.

An Incredibly difficult decision :-

“Today, I am announcing my determination to step down as captain of the Australian men’s Test team. It is an incredibly difficult decision, but one that is right for me, my family, and cricket,” Paine said in a statement. read from the statement.

“As a background to my decision, about four years ago, I was involved in a text exchange with a then-colleague. At the time, the exchange was solely the issue of the CA Integrity Unit investigation, which I fully participated in.

“That investigation and a Cricket Tasmania HR investigation at the same time found that there was no breach of the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct. However, I deeply regret the incident at the time and still do today.

At that time I spoke to my wife and family and am very grateful for their forgiveness and approval. We thought this event was behind us and I could focus solely on the team, as I have done for the last three or four years.
