Tom Latham’s brilliant century in the first match of the series surprised India

New Zealand chased down 307 in the series opener against India in Auckland on Friday (November 25). As Tom Latham and Kane Williamson struck brilliant unbeaten 94-run knocks. Latham and Williamson joined forces with a mammoth task. And they eventually got the job done with ease in the end as their unbeaten 221-run stand handed New Zealand a 1-0 lead.

It was Tom Latham who stunned the spectators

New Zealand did not start well. Finn Allen and Devon Conway faced Arshdeep Singh scoring 25 runs in his three overs but scoring was difficult at the other end. Shardul Thakur had an excellent opening spell. And that resulted in a wicket for Allen after taking two balls after being given to him by Yuzvendra Chahal. Umran Malik then impressed on debut with his pace. And Washington reined in the runs to increase the pressure on New Zealand. This resulted in Conway eventually being knocked down as he chased a full and wide delivery from Umran to the edge.

Daryl Mitchell fell in similar fashion as he chased a wide delivery from Umran. Only to mistime it as the fielder took a simple catch near the point boundary to give India a half-point lead. But gradually things changed. Williamson looked quite fluent for a change after a long lean but it was Latham who stunned the spectators. He initially played second fiddle, rotating the strike to good effect but once he got close to fifty, Latham changed gears.

Shardul Thakur was dismissed by Tom Latham

The left-handed batsman, who is renowned for playing spin well in the middle overs. They hit a six and a four off consecutive deliveries against Umran to signal his intentions. The game was still in the balance with 11 overs to chase but the 40th over completely swung the game in New Zealand’s favour. Shardul Thakur was dismissed by Tom Latham. As he hit four fours and a six to not only bring up his hundred in 76 balls. He also brought down the equation from a final 10 to 66.

From then on, the result was largely a foregone conclusion. Latham continued to use the short boundary down the leg side and cleared it with ease. He took the full toll of a shell-shocked Indian bowling unit to remain unbeaten on 145 and help his team chase down the target with 17 balls to spare. helped in
