UAE T20 League: The Emirates Cricket Board has reported that the Adani Group has acquired the franchise in the soon-to-be-launched IPL-style private UAE T20 League. So far, the ECB has announced the on-boarding of five franchises, including Manchester United’s Glazer family.

In a statement on Monday (May 9), the ECB said, “Adani Sportsline, a part of the diversified Adani Group, has made a historic step in franchise cricket by acquiring the rights to own and operate franchises in UAE’s premier T20 leagues.”

ECB to start the league next January-February

All six franchises are now with the ECB to start the league next January-February. Apart from Adani and Glazers, the ECB has also announced that Dubai-based Capri Global, Delhi Capitals’ GMR and Reliance Industries which currently own the Mumbai Indians team in the IPL. They also have as stakeholders of the league. The ECB is yet to announce Shah Rukh Khan’s stake in the league, which is expected to happen soon. Emirates Board has already signed a media rights deal with Zee Group.

Provide a platform and experience to the upcoming young cricketers

The ECB said, “Licensed by the Emirates Cricket Board, the UAE T20 League is an annual event. In which six franchise teams will participate in the 34-match competition. Top players from all the cricket playing nations are expected to be in the line-up of different teams. This league will provide a platform and experience to the upcoming young cricketers. This will be the first major overseas step by Adani Sportsline to connect with global fans of cricketing nations.”

Khalid Al Zarooni, Chairman of the UAE T20 League, said-

“As the owner of the franchise team, it is a proud moment for the Adani Group to associate with the T20 League of the UAE. The acquisition fits perfectly into the group of corporates who have already acquired the rights to the franchise team in the league. This augurs well for the Adani Group League. And we look forward to leveraging their business acumen and working together to make our league a success.”

The Ahmedabad-based group, led by Gautam Adani, tried to acquire a franchise in the IPL last October.
