Bridgetown (Barbados), Jan 23 (AP) England suffered a massive nine-wicket defeat against the West Indies in the first T20 International against the West Indies here on Saturday after a crushing Ashes defeat.

Coming to bat first, England had a very poor start. And the team lost six wickets for 39 runs in 10 overs. The visiting team was eventually reduced to 103 runs in 19.4 overs.

West Indies registered a comfortable nine-wicket win at 104 for one

West Indies in reply registered a comfortable nine-wicket. Victory at 104 for one with 17 balls to spare, thanks to a half-century from opener Brandon King (52 not out).

Elected to bat on an uneven bouncy pitch. England lost three for 10 and then seven for 49 as the team’s poor performance in Australia. Continued in the first match of the five-match series in the Caribbean here.

Lower-order batsmen Chris Jordan and Adil Rashid played an important role in taking the team’s score beyond 100 runs adding 36 runs for the eighth wicket. Jordan was the team’s top scorer with 28 runs in 23 balls. Rashid played an innings of 22 runs. Apart from these two, only captain Eoin Morgan (17) and James Vince (14) could reach double digits.

52 runs set the stage for an easy win for WI

Opener King then scored an unbeaten 52 off 49 balls with the help of four fours. And a six to set the stage for an easy win for West Indies. Opener Shai Hope made 20 while Nicholas Pooran scored 27 not out.

The second T20 will be played on Sunday.
