Why didn’t England appeal against Matthew Wade for ‘obstructing the field’? Jos Buttler replied

ENG vs AUS, 1st T20I, Jos Buttler: The first T20I between Australia and England in Perth saw some breathtaking action, with both teams scoring 200 runs. Although England emerged victorious in the match, there is one particular incident that they will not be happy with.

Matthew Wade trying to stop Mark Wood from taking a catch :-

Australian wicket-keeper batsman Matthew Wade ‘obstructed the field’ while trying to stop Mark Wood from taking the catch. While Wade seemed to be at fault, England captain Jos Buttler chose not to appeal.

Matthew Wade did this act in the 17th over of the innings :-

The incident happened in the 17th over of Australia’s batting when the hosts were looking to chase down a target of 209 runs. With 39 needed off 22 balls, Australia were not out of the equation yet.

Wade was on strike, and David Warner was on the non-striker’s end as Wood gave him a short-pitched delivery. This was awkward for Wade, who didn’t know where the ball had hit his bat.

Wood would have caught the ball with ease, but realizing that the England pacer was on his way to catch the ball, Wade put his hand on the fast bowler and prevented him from reaching the ball.

Responding to Butler’s decision not to appeal :-

The England players were not happy with the Australian wicket-keeper batsman’s act but decided not to appeal against it. When Jos Buttler was asked about the post-match incident, he said that he was not sure what actually happened but would appeal if such an incident is repeated in the T20 World Cup.

Why didn’t England appeal against Matthew Wade for ‘obstructing the field’? Jos Buttler replied.

“I was watching the ball the whole time, so I wasn’t sure what happened. He asked if I wanted to appeal, but I thought we’d been here in Australia for a long time, so it would be risky to do so. At the start of the match,” Butler said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Jos Buttler will not tolerate this kind of action again :-

Asked about the appeal on repeating such an incident in the T20 World Cup, Buttler said: “Maybe, yes”.

England won the match by 8 runs taking a 1-0 lead in the series. However, if the match had not ended in his favour, the incident involving Wade could have caused a major controversy.
