Bavuma will no Longer play in Sri Lanka Tour due to Thumb Fracture

South Africa will be without their regular captain Temba Bavuma for the remainder of the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka following an accident due to a fracture in the ODI series opener’s right thumb. Keshav Maharaj will play his role as captain for the remaining two ODIs. While the selection of a captain for the subsequent three-match T20I series is yet to be done.

Bavuma’s thumb got a direct blow on Wednesday:

The incident happened on Wednesday when Bavuma suffered a direct blow to his thumb during the 26th over of the game. He was trying to avoid a throw-in from a fielder. and was hit on the right thumb. The CSA statement said Bavuma retired hurt two overs later due to “constant restlessness”.

Temba is advised to come back home at the earliest to consult an expert:

Further scans on Bavuma’s thumb ‘indicated a fracture’ and the 31-year-old was advised to return home at the earliest to consult a specialist.

The time limit for the return of Bavuma will be determined:

“The timeline for his return will be determined after consultation with the doctor,” the CSA said.

South Africa lost the first ODI by 14 runs and went down 0-1 in the three-match series. While the second was to be played on Saturday (September 4).
