Western Storm’s welcome batsman Georgia Hennessy hit a one-run knock of 62 to set the core of a five-run win over Sunrisers in Fenner in the Charlotte Edwards Cup. But Georgia Hennessy 62 won but Western Storm missed the knockout.

The Role of Junior Partner:

Hennessy was serious about anything. Fi Morris played the role of junior partner initially, with the opening pair scoring 68 runs in the first 10 overs. Captain Sophie Luff played a quick 34-run stand as Storm closed for 147.

In reply, Cordelia Griffith hit five fours in the first 10 overs to put Sunrisers ahead of the run rate, but Nicole Harvey took three wickets to stall the pace and dry up the scoring rate as the hosts fell six runs short.

Morris satisfied Hennessy to play the campaign role in the opening overs, but hit a boundary in the final over of the powerplay. When the ground spread, Hennessy drove through cover except for four before cutting one off her leg to score 50 at the end of the eighth over.

Grace Scrivens made a breakthrough in the 11th when Morris took the peak over behind a 21-run score, but Hennessy continued to attack. She brought Gayatri Gole back into the field to complete her fifty off 51 balls and smashed a wide ball from Naomi Dattani through extra cover for another boundary.

Hennessy dismisses Dattani:

Lough simplified her intention to cut Sonali Patel with her feet behind the square and then cleverly cut it four more before taking two boundaries from the middle of extra cover from the goal. Dattani was then dismissed by Georgia Hennessy, who took a well judged and caught at long-on and gave Scrivens her second wicket. Lough fell soon thereafter, bowled in the final over by Dattani.

Despite two more wickets, Danielle ended the innings in the system, hitting a boundary off the keeper’s head and hitting a huge six off the last ball.
Griffith and Alice MacLeod put Sunrisers well ahead of the run rate at the start, 47 from the powerplay, taking 11 ahead of the Storm in the same stage.

Griffith set the pace with a boundary off the first ball, the first of five in her innings of 32 off 25 balls. McLeod also traced the ropes, with Sunrisers keeping the pressure off the scoreboard. Harvey took a quick catch off her own delivery and broke the momentum when McLeod hit her for a four for 17.

Cordelia Griffith scored Storm’s 50 in the eighth over, but it gave Harvey her second wicket when she pulled a high over midwicket where Morris took a brilliant catch.

Georgia’s interest in Sunrisers:

Nicole Harvey conceded her first boundary when Dattani ran Daman through cover and then did another drill straight down the ground for four more. Despite Katherine Speed being run out, Georgia’s next over went for 13 runs to keep Sunrisers interested.

With 50 needed in the last five overs, Dattani remained busy but when two wickets fell in successive overs, the need for 14 in the final over proved too much.
