The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) arranged for their travels and stay in the Maldives. Also paid for the charter flight that carried them back to Australia after the government opened its borders.

A group of 38 Australians comprising players, coaches, commentators, and other media personnel. All were involved in the now-suspended IPL 2021 have landed in Sydney after their sojourn in the Maldives.

Following the postponement of the tournament earlier in the month, the entire Australian contingent – barring Michael Hussey. He had tested positive for covid-19, was kept in isolation in India- was transported to the Maldives as the Australian government had banned all incoming flights from India in wake of the second wave in the country.

The New South Wales state government has coordinated a quarantine arrangement for the cricket contingent. That does not impact the capped, overstretched system in place for travelers arriving from abroad. The players in the IPL work on individual contracts, the league is not part of their obligations with the national team.

The cricketers “did not take one place in quarantine that anyone else has otherwise,” Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said. “That’s something we insisted on with the New South Wales state government. They were going to allow that flight back in.”
