Delhi Capitals all-rounder Axar Patel has said that even if he was offered the captaincy of the team in the middle of the IPL season (IPL 2023). He would have turned down the franchise’s offer. Delhi Capitals have had a nightmare season after being out of contention for the playoffs. As they have won five out of 13 matches so far and are second from the bottom of the table.

The David Warner-led side had a disastrous start to the season. As the team lost their five match in a row and there was a buzz by former cricketers for promoting vice-captain Akshar as the franchise captain.

The all-rounder told The Indian Express, “When your team is going through such a bad season, things like this only make it worse. You need to back your players, your captain and if you change captaincy in the middle of the season, it doesn’t send a good message.”

“Even if I was the captain, things could have remained the same. We failed collectively as a team and you can’t blame the captain.”

He said, “I never talked about the captaincy but if I become the captain, I will not take the responsibility in the middle of the season. I don’t want to spoil the atmosphere in the dressing room.”

Axar is the second-highest run-scorer for the franchise this season with 268 runs and has 11 wickets in 13 matches, with an economy of less than seven.
