Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting and Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly were seen arguing fiercely with the umpire. Their accusation? Rajasthan Royals were allegedly misusing the Impact Player rule.

What Sparked The Fight?

Royals had named just 3 overseas players – Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, and Trent Boult – in their starting XI. They also had Nandre Burger and Rovman Powell among their 5 designated substitutes. Now, with one overseas slot free in the playing XI, they could use the Impact Player rule.

Ponting And Ganguly’s Confusion:-

Here’s where the misunderstanding happened. Ponting and Ganguly believed Royals were fielding 5 overseas players because they brought in Rovman Powell as a substitute fielder, while Nandre Burger replaced Hetmyer under the Impact Player rule.

Did Royals Break The Rule?

Nope! Royals played by the rules. They had only 3 overseas players (Buttler, Boult, Burger) on the field at any given time. Even with Powell as a substitute fielder, the total remained 4, which is perfectly legal.

So, why the anger from Ponting and Ganguly?

Seems like a case of miscommunication. Perhaps Ponting and Ganguly weren’t aware that the Impact Player rule allows a 5th overseas player to be included as a substitute fielder.

Match Result

Thanks to a brilliant knock of 84 by Riyan Parag, Rajasthan Royals posted a competitive 185/5 in their 20 overs. Delhi Capitals fell short, managing only 173/5 in their chase. Royals climbed to the second spot in the points table, while DC remains at number 8.
