Slow Over Rate Rule in IPL: What is It, Why is It Important, And What is The Punishment? Captains in the IPL are having a headache thanks to the slow over-rate rule! Big names like Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shubman Gill, and now Hardik Pandya have all been fined for it. Pandya got a cool ₹12 lakh penalty for his team’s slow bowling against the Punjab Kings.
Think of it like this: if a team doesn’t bowl all their overs within a set time, that’s a slow over rate. In the IPL, all 20 overs need to be bowled within 90 minutes (or 1.5 hours).

That includes two breaks (called strategic timeouts) of 2.5 minutes each, but not DRS reviews or injury time. So, if a team falls behind on overs, it’s slow over rate time.
