Slow Over Rate Rule in IPL: What is It, Why is It Important, And What is The Punishment? Captains in the IPL are having a headache thanks to the slow over-rate rule! Big names like Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shubman Gill, and now Hardik Pandya have all been fined for it. Pandya got a cool ₹12 lakh penalty for his team’s slow bowling against the Punjab Kings.

But Wait, What Exactly is This Slow Over Rate Thing?

Think of it like this: if a team doesn’t bowl all their overs within a set time, that’s a slow over rate. In the IPL, all 20 overs need to be bowled within 90 minutes (or 1.5 hours).

That includes two breaks (called strategic timeouts) of 2.5 minutes each, but not DRS reviews or injury time. So, if a team falls behind on overs, it’s slow over rate time.

And What’s The Punishment? Buckle Up!

• First offense: Captain coughs up ₹12 lakh.
• Second offense: The Captain pays a whopping ₹24 lakh, and the rest of the team gets fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee (whichever is lower).
• Third offense: Captain gets fined again (₹30 lakh this time) and sits out a match! The rest of the team coughs up ₹12 lakh or half their match fee (ouch!).

Why is This Rule Even A Thing? Here’s The Lowdown:–

• Keeps things on time and exciting for fans. A slow game drags on, and who wants to see that?
• Messes with team strategies. Captains might have to change their plans on the fly because of limited time.
• Worn-out bowlers have less impact. Bowling for too long can tire out the bowlers, making them less effective.
• Unfair advantage for the bowling team? Extra time bowling can disrupt the batting team’s rhythm, especially those crucial death overs.
