WIPL 2023: Disney Star, Viacom18, Sony, and Zee to bid for media rights on Monday

WIPL 2023: All major Indian broadcasters including Disney Star, Viacom18, Sony, and Zee will bid for the media rights of the Women’s Indian Premier League in the auction to be held on Monday. The BCCI has adopted a closed-bid auction method for the day-long event and will announce the winner on the same day.

WIPL 2023, media rights: Eight potential bidders purchased the tender document

Eight potential bidders had bought the tender document which was put up for sale in December. The rights, spread over a five-year period between 2023-27, included three categories: linear (TV), digital and composite (TV and digital). The rights will sell globally including in India.

BCCI has also decided not to set a base price

BCCI has also decided not to set a base price as it wants the market to determine its value considering the untapped area of WIPL. This is in stark contrast to the process when it sold the media rights for the men’s IPL last year for a record net amount of around US$6 billion. Those rights were divided into several categories and areas. And with the auction exercise lasting three days, there was fierce opposition from many players.

WIPL media rights are important

WIPL media rights are important. In the tender document for the franchise rights, the BCCI mentioned that it would share 80% of the business rights income from WIPL with the teams in the first five years, 60% in the next five years, and 50% thereafter. Apart from this, the franchisee will also get 80% of the money received from the central licensing rights.

BCCI has not yet announced the dates of the tournament

After initially organizing the Women’s T20 Challenge as an exhibition event, the BCCI last year finally decided to launch the WIPL with its inaugural edition to be played in March. While the BCCI has not yet announced the dates of the tournament.

Five WIPL franchises to unveiled on January 25

The BCCI will unveil the five WIPL franchises on January 25. The financial bids of these franchisees, currently submitted in sealed covers, will be opened on the day. BCCI has listed 10 cities in the bid document. So far, at least eight of the 10 men’s IPL franchises have confirmed that they will bid for a franchise.
