BCCI Gets Down to Business: Retention Process Begins!
Every IPL season witnesses a nail-biting player auction where franchises battle it out to acquire the best cricketing talent. But before the auction frenzy unfolds, franchises are given a golden opportunity to retain their core players. This retention window is a strategic game-changer. Franchises have to make some tough calls – who to retain and who to release back into the auction pool.

Here’s the exciting catch: This year, the BCCI has tweaked the retention rules a bit. Gone are the days of the good ol’ four player retentions (along with two Right to Match cards). The BCCI has implemented a dynamic new system that allows franchises more flexibility. So, how will this new system play out? Will it favor the big spenders or create a level playing field for all teams?
BCCI Unveiling the New Retention Rules
The new BCCI retention policy introduces a tiered system. Franchises can now retain a maximum of four players – but there’s a strategic twist. They can retain a maximum of three players across any combination of the following categories:
- Two players in any category
- One player from the pre-capped pool (players capped for India) and one player from the uncapped pool (players not yet capped for India)
- Three players from the uncapped pool
This new system throws the doors open for some interesting team compositions. Will franchises prioritize experience with capped players, or will they bank on the exciting potential of young, uncapped talents? The upcoming weeks will be abuzz with speculation and anticipation as franchises decide on their retention strategies.
So, what do you think?
Do these new retention rules make the IPL more exciting? Will this system give a chance for young players to shine?
