Mohammad Wasim Takes the Helm for Pakistan Women at Asia Cup

Mohammad Wasim Takes the Helm for Pakistan Women at Asia Cup.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has sprung a surprise by appointing former batsman as the head coach of the national women’s team for the upcoming Asia Cup.

This comes after a string of underwhelming performances, most recently against England. But who is Wasim, and what does he bring to the table?

Wasim, a middle-order batsman in his playing days, donned the whites for Pakistan in 18 Tests and 25 ODIs. While his international career might not have been the flashiest, he carved a niche for himself in domestic cricket. After hanging up his boots, Wasim transitioned smoothly into coaching, leading the now-defunct Northern team to impressive results.

Under his guidance, Northern became runners-up in the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Trophy for two consecutive seasons and even clinched the National T20 Cup title in 2019-20.

A Fresh Voice for the Women in Green

Wasim’s appointment signifies a shift in the PCB’s approach to the women’s team.

The team has been under the guidance of an interim coach for a while now, and this move seems to indicate a desire for a more long-term vision. Wasim’s experience in domestic cricket, particularly in the shorter format, could prove invaluable for the upcoming Asia Cup, a T20 tournament.

Can Mohammad Wasim Inspire a turnaround?

The Women in Green will be looking to bounce back from their recent dip in form, and Wasim’s arrival brings a wave of optimism.

His coaching staff also boasts former internationals Junaid Khan (assistant coach) and Abdur Rehman (spin-bowling coach), adding valuable experience.

But with the Asia Cup just around the corner (starting July 19th in Sri Lanka), Wasim will have a limited time to make his mark.

What are your thoughts on this new coaching setup for the Pakistan Women’s team? Can Wasim lead them to glory in the Asia Cup?
