New Zealand A batsman Joe Carter laments falling three short of his maiden first-class double century

New Zealand A batsman Joe Carter lamented falling three short of his maiden first-class double century, after “batting with patience” for most of his innings during the first four-day game against India A in Bengaluru.

Carter remained unbeaten on 73 off 160 balls at the end of the first day as India A’s medium pacers took advantage of the moisture and offered to trouble New Zealand A’s batsmen.

With the visitors scoring 156 for 5 on the second day, Carter led the show adding another 124 to his score in just 135 balls. He finished with a first-class best of 197, which included 26 fours and three sixes, as he picked up the pace along the lower order to help New Zealand A stack 400.

“So I batted with patience yesterday. But today, when the pitch was easy to bat on and when I got some bad deliveries, I freed myself to score. I love both defensive and offensive batting But I bat according to the conditions.”

Carter missed his double century when he was stumped by Kuldeep Yadav

He said, ‘To be honest, it’s a little disappointing right now. But it was not like that when I got out. “I wasn’t thinking about my 200 then. The team management told me I had 20 minutes, after which we would announce.

“We used to practice on these pitches for hours. Kuldeep Yadav does wrist spin with the left arm, so we played Michael Ripon, who bowls like Kuldeep.”We were surprised when India came out with only one frontline spinner [in this match].
