The Sri Lankan team has not got a chance to cheer even once on the current tour of New Zealand. After losing both the matches of the first Test series, the team was out of the race for the final of the World Test Championship. After that now the danger has increased for the team even for the qualification of ODI World Cup. In fact, in the first match of the three-match ODI series, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 198 runs. After this, the position of the team in the points table of the World Cup Super League has also changed. After the Test Championship, now the ODI World Cup ticket also seems to be in trouble for Sri Lanka.

The ODI World Cup will be held in India in October-November this year. For that, ODI matches are being played under the World Cup Super League. 7 out of the top 8 teams in the points table have been confirmed. India being the host has already qualified. For this, the top 8 teams will directly qualify in the league stage. Apart from this, the remaining two teams will come to the league round after the qualifier round. England, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand have also confirmed their places. Now the danger is over South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Ireland, out of which only one team can go directly to the league round. The remaining three will have to play in the qualifiers, which will begin on June 18.

In the current Super League points table, West Indies (88) are at 8th, South Africa (78) at 9th and Sri Lanka (77) at 10th position. Only one of these three teams can become the eighth team for the league stage. South Africa has yet to play two matches against the Netherlands. West Indies don’t have a single match left. In such a situation, even if Sri Lanka wins both its remaining matches and South Africa wins both its matches from Netherlands, still Sri Lanka will have to play the qualifiers. If South Africa now loses to Netherlands and Sri Lanka wins both the remaining matches then only they can go directly to the league stage.

South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies, any two of these teams will have to play the qualifiers. Where there will be a total of 10 teams and only two will go to the main round. The qualifiers will have teams like Zimbabwe, Netherlands, Scotland who have the guts to beat any team. Possibly Ireland and Namibia could also make it to the qualifiers, which stunned many big teams in the T20 World Cup. In such a situation, any two teams from Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka will go to this round, they will have to push their heels to qualify. Otherwise we can see that any big team can be out of this tournament.
