Cummins has admitted that it is unrealistic for him to be Australia’s sole captain in all three formats, as he again called for the lifting of David Warner’s lifetime leadership ban. Cricket Australia officials have the next two months to decide who will replace Aaron Finch. The country’s ODI captain, the opener, announced his retirement from the format.

The captaincy of Australia’s T20 team will likely be on call soon, with Finch revealing last weekend that he would consider his future in that format later this summer. Cummins, Warner, Steven Smith, and Alex Carey remain potential front runners to fill the roles. Between them, as in Australia’s leadership brigade, is a mix of the new and the old.

Cummins has had an impressive start as Test captain with an Ashes series win, a win in Pakistan, and a drawn series in Sri Lanka, but the fact that he has missed 28 of the last 66 ODIs makes the decision very difficult.

Cummins’ suggestion is likely to involve something along the lines of co-captains, something that has not been done in Australian cricket so far. Meanwhile, Cummins also backed Warner’s leadership abilities, pointing out that the opener had helped ease the Test captain’s debut.

“My phone is here if the CA wants to talk. What is done at the end of the day in the past? Good thing there’s a new board. I’m always happy to sit down and talk with them.”

Warner is not part of the upcoming brief T20I tour of Australia next week, which means he is likely to meet CA ahead of the AGM in October.
