Bangladesh’s quest for T20 World Cup glory just got a whole lot tougher. Their star fast bowler, Shoriful Islam, is a major doubt for the tournament opener against Sri Lanka after sustaining a nasty hand injury during their warm-up match against India on Saturday.

A Stellar Performance Cut Short: Shoriful Islam Impresses Before Injury Strikes

Shoriful was arguably Bangladesh’s brightest spark in the warm-up clash. He was the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers, conceding a mere 26 runs in his 3.5 overs and picking up a crucial wicket. However, his impressive spell was abruptly halted when disaster struck.

A Brutal Blow: Hardik Pandya Shot Forces Shoriful Islam Off the Field

Facing the in-form Hardik Pandya, Shoriful unleashed a searing yorker. But the Indian batsman, known for his power-hitting, managed to get under the delivery and smash it back down the pitch. The ball rocketed towards Shoriful, catching him flush on his left palm. The impact was so severe that Shoriful was forced to leave the field immediately, his hand visibly swollen.

The Price of Power: Injury Requires Stitches, Casting Doubt on Shoriful Islam Participation

Later examinations revealed the extent of the damage. Shoriful required six stitches between his palm and index finger. This raises serious concerns about his availability for the tournament opener against Sri Lanka, scheduled for June 7th in Dallas.

A Big Loss for Bangladesh: Shoriful Islam Absence Leaves a Void

Shoriful’s absence would be a massive blow to Bangladesh’s bowling attack. Alongside Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Tanzim Shakib, he is one of the team’s leading pace bowlers. His ability to generate swing and pick up early wickets is crucial for Bangladesh’s success.

Back-Up Plans: Bangladesh Prepared for the Worst?

Fortunately, Bangladesh did have some foresight. They opted to carry two traveling reserves, including pacer Hasan Mahmud. This decision was likely made to have a backup option for the injured Taskin Ahmed, who is expected to recover in time for the Sri Lanka match. However, with Shoriful’s injury, Hasan Mahmud might find himself thrust into a more prominent role.
