Former captain Aaron Finch has said that Australia were looking in very poor form on the field during their poor start to the World Cup, which saw heavy defeats against India and South Africa.
Australia started with a six-wicket defeat against India, followed by a defeat to South Africa in Lucknow, which included 6 missed chances. Due to varying degrees of difficulty and was out for 177 runs.

Finch, who was Australia’s white-ball captain less than a year ago, said in ESPNcricinfo’s Match Day Show, “At the moment Australia looked very weak physically on the field.
“The last thing you want to do is have a bad start to the tournament because there’s no way to get yourself back into it. It’s been a tough start…two games where you say if we’re tied, win one, lose one, we’re fine with that, which didn’t happen.
After the loss to India, Australia made two changes for the match against South Africa. Cameron Green’s omission in favor of Marcus Stoinis had been expected for some time. But the decision to include Josh Inglis in place of Carey was even more of a shock.
Australia’s poor start to the tournament has put the spotlight on current captain Pat Cummins. But Finch argued that some of the calls he had to make were borderline and again put the spotlight on the team’s extensive presence in the field.

“The only difference I saw in the field was that the South Africans were much tighter in the fielding ring… they were all running inside. I know the batsmen felt a lot of pressure because they couldn’t get out of the strike. Australia, on the other hand, has been very standoffish, they have stayed in the ring, and this has allowed South Africa’s new batsmen to come into their innings. “Maybe this is more of a change in mindset than anything strategic.”
“Really the thing that matters most to me is that right now it doesn’t look like the Australian team is really desperate enough to put everything on the line,” Watson told ESPNcricinfo. “There are moments when he is fully engaged in the game and desperate to make an impact. But there are also moments when he appears to be on the move. In the World Cup, you may not have that much time that you are playing in the game. What is required of each individual is to be fully engaged on every single ball, trying to leave their mark on the game. Sometimes it was a little bit difficult.”
