Before Root, the record of scoring most runs for England in the ODI World Cup was held in the name of Graham Gooch. Gooch scored 897 runs in 21 matches between 1979 and 1992. Root broke Gooch’s 31-year-old record by scoring 917 runs in 19 matches.
