Mathews criticizes Shakib and Bangladesh on ‘time out’

World Cup 2023: Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has criticized Shakib Al Hasan and the Bangladesh team for withdrawing the time-out request during the World Cup 2023 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Mathews became the first cricketer to be timed out in international cricket when Bangladesh appealed in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings in Delhi on Monday.

Umpires Richard Illingworth and Marias Erasmus asked Shakib to withdraw the appeal twice

On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Marias Erasmus twice asked Shakib if he would like to withdraw his appeal given that the batsman’s helmet strap was broken, but when he did not do so, they gave Matthews out.

Mathews criticized Shakib and Bangladesh

According to the ICC playing conditions, the new batsman has to be ready to play the next ball within two minutes of the previous batsman’s dismissal. The umpires ruled that Mathews had crossed the two-minute mark before the helmet strap broke and was therefore given out. However, Mathews denied this and alleged that he had video evidence to support his claims.

Mathews said it was a ‘disgraceful’ act by Shakib

Former Sri Lanka captain Mathews said it was a ‘disgraceful’ act by Shakib. “I don’t know where the common sense went, because obviously it’s disrespectful to Shakib and Bangladesh, if they want to play cricket like this then obviously they have stooped to that level, I think something very Wrong because – if I am late I will reach.”

Matthews – My two minutes have passed to reach the crease

After Bangladesh won the match by three wickets, Mathews told reporters, “My two minutes have passed to get to the crease and the law says you have to be ready within two minutes and I was there for two minutes, 45 or 50 seconds.” There was – I still had five seconds left after my helmet broke and the umpires have also told our coaches that they did not see my helmet break. I mean, I was just asking for my helmet.”
