Former Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi has said about India’s defeat that Team India lost due to excessive overconfidence. His statement has gone viral on social media.
Afridi had given this statement on Pakistani channel Samaa TV during the Indian innings in the final. Australia won the toss and invited India to bat first
After Gill was out after scoring 4 runs, captain Rohit Sharma played an inning of 47 runs in 31 balls. But soon after Rohit’s dismissal, Shreyas Iyer also got out cheaply on the ball of Pat Cummins.
Shahid Afridi, unhappy with Iyer’s shot selection, said about India’s batting performance, “When you are continuously winning games, overconfidence also increases. So that thing gets you killed.”
After the fall of 3 wickets, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul made a slow partnership of 67 runs for the fourth wicket in 18.3 overs for India.
Meanwhile, Kohli also scored his half-century but after his dismissal. The Indian team kept losing wickets at regular intervals and was reduced to 240 runs.
After this, with the help of a strong partnership of 192 runs for the fourth wicket between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, Australia achieved the target of victory by losing only 4 wickets with 7 overs remaining.
During a discussion on the same channel after the final, Afridi expressed displeasure at the Indian audience for not appreciating Head’s efforts. Head scored 137 runs and became the third Australian batsman to score a century in a World Cup final.
Afridi said, “I think we all have experienced this at some point in our career. Whenever we hit a four score a century or take a wicket, there is never any feedback from the (Indian) audience. When Travis Head scored a century, there was silence in the audience. Why?
A sports-loving nation always appreciates each athlete and their efforts. But it was amazing not to see the same coming from the Indian audience, which is a so-called educating audience.

It was such a big century that at least some people could stand up and applaud. And the way the body language of the team kept falling, the audience also kept doing the same.”
