New Zealand has been one of the most consistent teams in the 50-over World Cup. She has reached the final in the last two editions and the semi-finals eight times.
However, often, they are tagged as the ‘underdog’, always being underestimated. Many would not have considered them worthy of securing a place in the semi-finals, leave alone the finals, but the team remains focused on the task at hand, regardless of what the world thinks of them.
New Zealand captain gave a befitting reply to the critics :-
On the eve of the World Cup opener against England, New Zealand’s stand-in captain Tom Latham broke his silence on the issue, saying, “We are not focused on what people are predicting.” India, England and Australia have always been the majority choices as semi-finalists.
“From our point of view, we are completely focused on what we have to do. The brand of cricket we want to play is our main focus, and when it comes to the end of the tournament, if We’re in that position, so that’s great.
Kane Williamson out of the starting lineup on Thursday:-
The team’s regular captain Kane Williamson will be missing from the starting lineup on Thursday and the stand-in captain says that Williamson’s presence here is a big thing in itself. “Any team that doesn’t have Kane, … you know. We’ll definitely be better off having him, but I think him being here is being in the World Cup team. What he’s done in the last four to five months It has worked, that’s proof of it.”
Let us tell you that Latham has never played at Narendra Modi Stadium, this huge venue can be intimidating with its size and scale. However, the Kiwi says nothing could be better than playing the opening match against England on this ground.
