Despite this, he won the toss and elected to bat, only to see Tom Lamonby cheap.

James Hildreth (54) and Matt Renshaw (48) assisted Abell on Somerset’s first batting point of the season.

The highest score in their last two games was only 180, but Renshaw and Abel guided them 62–1 at lunchtime.

Somerset old boy Jamie Overton broke the stand on 66 with the support of a fine low slip catch by Ollie Pope, and after Tom Banton scored 16 on his return from injury, Abel found another reliable ally in Hildreth.

He reached his second half-century of the session off 75 balls but was then caught on point, inducing a mini-collapse, falling three wickets for 14 runs to leave Somerset at 237-6.

Abell was determined to reach his century off 214 balls and hit a total of 19 boundaries as he and Josh Davey (19 not out) watched the final 12-and-a-half overs.

Surrey Fast bowler Jordan Clarke:-

“We think the pitch is very slow so if you get your line right, you will not get punished.

“We stuck well enough to take six wickets and we are in a good position.

“There is a big opportunity for us if we can get some early wickets and show the same discipline and hard work.”

Somerset Captain Tom Abell:-

“We found it really hard to score in the morning. But James Hildreth and Matt Renshaw helped me put together the partnerships we were striving for.

“The hardest thing is to trust your process when it’s not going well. But the coaches have put in countless hours with me. And the batting group trying to get us in a good place and the energy around us is great.

“It’s so easy to cut your game but ultimately it’s all about getting to the ball. And I’m glad it’s working for me and the team, despite the disappointing first two results.”
