How did Angelo Mathews get ‘Time Out’ against Bangladesh? Umpire explained the complete rules

In the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews was ‘timed out’, due to which a controversy has started. For the first time in international cricket, a batsman has been timed out.

How did Angelo Mathews get out?

All this happened when Mathews reached the crease to bat and was preparing to face Shakib’s bowling. Meanwhile, while trying to tighten the helmet strap, his helmet strap broke. Matthews then ordered a replacement helmet but it took some time to arrive.

After this, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a “time out” dismissal against Mathews and won it. In this way Mathews was out without facing a single ball.

According to the World Cup 2023, these are the rules : –

According to the World Cup 2023 playing conditions, after the fall of the wicket, it is mandatory for the next batsman to play the next ball within 2 minutes. If the batsmen delay in doing so, the opposing team can appeal for time out.

Angelo Mathews said :-

“It was clearly a disrespect from Shakib and Bangladesh,” Matthews said. “If they want to take wickets like that and stoop down to that level, there is quite a lot wrong.

“I have no words to explain it. In my 15 years of career I have never seen a team or a player fall so low. I don’t think any other team will do that. We know that no one bowls without a helmet. Does not face.

Umpire first talked to Shakib Al Hasan :-

Let us also tell you that the umpires first went and talked to Shakib and explained to him that he should withdraw his appeal but he did not agree and clearly agreed due to which ultimately Mathews was declared out.

Apart from this, after the match the Sri Lankan team did not shake hands with the Bangladesh team and during the match there was tension between many players of both the teams.
