ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Team India’s tension increased before the World Cup due to Shreyas Iyer’s injury. Two things were most discussed in the Asia Cup Super-4 clash between India and Pakistan in Colombo.
Kishan had strengthened his claim at number 5 by scoring 82 runs in difficult conditions in the Asia Cup group match against Pakistan in Pallekele on September 2.

One was the replacement of Shreyas Iyer with KL Rahul due to back spasms and the other was the inclusion of Jasprit Bumrah in place of Mohammed Shami.
This was only the third match of Shreyas Iyer after about 6 months after back surgery. Iyer, who returned to Team India from the Asia Cup after injury, scored 14 runs while batting in the match against Pakistan.
Iyer definitely fielded the entire innings against Nepal, but he did not get a chance to bat because India won the rain-interrupted match by 10 wickets.
From the team sheet posted by the BCCI media department on WhatsApp and social media, it appeared that Rahul was included in the playing eleven at the last minute as Iyer’s name was at number 4 in this sheet and Rahul was kept as the 13th player.
Due to Iyer’s injury, it seems that his body is still not ready to bear the pressure of international cricket.
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar looked unhappy after Shreyas Iyer got injured. He said on Star Sports after the toss, “If it is so (Shreyas is injured) then I am just curious about the fitness of Shreyas Iyer.
He has been out for a long time. The big thing was that he is fit now. He was fit for about 20 runs scored against Pakistan. And now he has back spasms.
If there are such issues for the captain and the team management then you have to start looking at the players. We were waiting for his arrival.
He played the first match and the second match. It is unfortunate, I am happy that Ishan Kishan is playing.”
Iyer’s injury is also a matter of tension for captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid because they had fixed his name for number 4 after the player’s return.
Iyer has not played international cricket since March and was out of the entire IPL due to a back injury.
The decision to undergo surgery for Shreyas was taken after realizing that his injury would not heal with rest and rehab alone.
Iyer has been selected in both the Asia Cup and World Cup squads after being declared fit by the NCA medical staff. Due to this, Team India management took a sigh of relief because, with the arrival of Iyer, the ongoing debate regarding number 4 was put to an end.
Rahul has also returned to Team India for the first time since March due to injury and due to not being fully fit, he did not play in the first two matches of the Asia Cup.
In such a situation, will Team India take the risk of increasing the problems of its middle order by going into a mega event like the World Cup with two not completely fit batsmen like Iyer and Rahul?
What are the options for India? Although Team India has declared its provisional squad for the World Cup, they have a chance to make changes to it till 27 September.

In such a situation, the Indian team can also include players like Tilak Verma or Sanju Samson in the team, so that if Iyer or Rahul gets injured in a big event like the World Cup, the Indian team will have Tilak or Samson to take their place in the middle order. As if the batsmen are present.
