3rd ODI against New Zealand 2023 World Cup: West Indies’ direct-qualification hopes dashed

West Indies’ chances of qualifying directly for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup already suffered a setback after they received two Super League points for maintaining a slow over-rate in the third ODI against New Zealand.

West Indies were seventh with 80 points even before the start of the ODI series against New Zealand, last in the Super League cycle. They lost the series 2–1, giving them 90 points, but a two-point penalty took them to 88 points with a net run rate of -0.738.

While this puts them in bounds, Ireland, currently ranked ninth with 68 points, could finish above West Indies if they win two of the three ODIs against Bangladesh next year, as they have a better NRR. (-0.382) is above West Indies on the NRR front.

Australia (eighth out of 70), Sri Lanka (tenth in 62nd), and South Africa (up 11th at 49) are below the West Indies with several series to go. Australia has 12 games in hand, Sri Lanka six, and South Africa 11. The qualifying events in the West Indies and Zimbabwe in June 1975 and 1979 the following year were a good shot.
