Australia captain Tim Paine to walk into the Ashes without a first-class match. Paine is setting to go into the Ashes series without the first-class fixture under his belt.
But he is setting to play club cricket and second XI cricket for Tasmania next week ahead of Australia’s intra-squad duel in Brisbane ahead of the Gabba Test.
Tim Paine is recovering from neck surgery in September and hasn’t played at all this summer. His last competitive game was in April.

Before the first Ashes Test at the Gabba in December, he was expected to play four all-out matches, including the Shield game.
Last week’s rain obscured all hopes of playing for his club at the University of Tasmania. He is now set to play the first day of his duel against South Hobart Sandy Bay on Saturday but will miss Tasmania’s Shield duel against Western Australia starting Sunday.
He will instead play in Tasmania’s second XI in the four-day match against South Australia which starts on Monday. Paine will also have the opportunity to play in an intra-squad clash starting December 1 in Brisbane.
Australia’s chairman of selectors, George Bailey, did not care about Paine’s preparation.
“Just get some cricket under his belt, which we really believe is going to be back this weekend,” George Bailey said on Wednesday. “And I think from all the reports, the surgery went really well.
He’s feeling really, really confident. I think they’ve actually had to held him back a little over. The past few weeks to make sure the real healing tip is gone.
Okay and now it’s really just a matter of getting some game time under his belt. So he’s really relaxed and really encouraging to guide the team on day one at the Gabba.”
Paine will turn 37 on the first day of the Ashes series. And he told Sen last week that he has not given any focus on his future after this summer.
