South Africa will be without their regular captain Temba Bavuma for the remainder of the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka following an accident due to a fracture in the ODI series opener’s right thumb. Keshav Maharaj will play his role as captain for the remaining two ODIs. While the selection of a captain for the subsequent three-match T20I series is yet to be done.
The incident happened on Wednesday when Bavuma suffered a direct blow to his thumb during the 26th over of the game. He was trying to avoid a throw-in from a fielder. and was hit on the right thumb. The CSA statement said Bavuma retired hurt two overs later due to “constant restlessness”.
Further scans on Bavuma’s thumb ‘indicated a fracture’ and the 31-year-old was advised to return home at the earliest to consult a specialist.
“The timeline for his return will be determined after consultation with the doctor,” the CSA said.
South Africa lost the first ODI by 14 runs and went down 0-1 in the three-match series. While the second was to be played on Saturday (September 4).
