MS Dhoni ‘s jersey retired: Three years after MS Dhoni retired, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to ‘retire’ the number worn by the World Cup-winning captain, paying tribute to his contribution to the game. This means MS Dhoni’s iconic number 7 jersey will no longer be seen on any other Indian cricketer.

MS Dhoni became the second Indian to receive such an honour :-

He is only the second Indian player after Sachin Tendulkar to receive such an honour. In the year 2017, the Master Blaster’s signature number 10 jersey was also retired forever.

Also, BCCI has informed the national team players, especially the debutants, that they do not have the option of numbers related to Tendulkar and Dhoni. A senior board official said,

“Young players and current Indian team players have been asked not to choose MS Dhoni’s number 7 jersey. BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player cannot get number 7, and number 10 is already out of the list of available numbers.

Due to this decision of BCCI, the options of Team India players were limited :-

Due to BCCI’s decision, the options of Team India players have been limited to some extent. As a rule, ICC allows players to choose any number between 1 and 100, but in India, the options are limited. “Currently, there are around 60 numbers assigned to the regular players and contenders for the Indian team. So even if a player is out of the team for almost a year, we do not give his number to any new player. This means that a newly debuted player has around 30 numbers to choose from. ,

Yashasvi Jaiswal did not get her lucky number for this reason :-

Let us also tell you that earlier this year, when 21-year-old opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was debuting for India, he was keen on the number 19, which was on his back while playing for Rajasthan Royals. But because this number was given to cricketer-turned-commentator Dinesh Karthik, who is no longer a regular player for India but is still an active player, Jaiswal was given number 64.

Even at the junior level there is competition for the ‘coveted’ numbers. During his Under-19 days, the country’s most promising young batsman, Shubman Gill, could not occupy the preferred No. 7 position as he was already taken. Ultimately he reached number 77 and remained at this number even after joining the senior team.
