Ben McDermott hits first half-century in Hobart Hurricanes BBL, topping McDermott’s order to help fire Hobart Hurricanes to 24-run KFC BBL victory over Melbourne Stars.
McDermott scored 67 off 43 balls, including a six in a home yard outside Blundstone Arena. As the Hobart Hurricanes posted 6-180 on their Christmas Eve win.
He opened with captain Matthew Wade (39 off 27) when Hurricanes called for D’Arcy Short to transfer to No.

Short has battled for a place in the tournament so far. Scoring 26 off 24 balls in addition to hitting three consecutive fours.
The Stars lost Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell cheaply within the first eight overs of the chase and finished 9-156 on top of English import Joe Clarke’s (54 off 40) best effort.
Storm Tej and Player of the Match Nathan Ellis (2-27) bowled some excellent clutch overs at death and took the wicket of power hitter Andre Russell (12 off 13) in the third-last over.
Russell was rested on three when the third umpire touched an outfield catch claimed by a short to the ground.
The storm was sensationally handed a five-run penalty after batsman Tim David was called for a deliberate short run in the last over of his team’s innings.
Trying to turn back for the second run to keep the strike, David was about two meters short of the crease.
Earlier, McDermott started with Wade for 93, before the captain dropped Nathan Coulter-Nile in the 10th over before the Hobart Hurricanes elected to bat first.
Coulter-Nile played a fine 2-22 knock-in four overs. With the Hurricanes middle-order perhaps not fully reaping the feat of a quick start.
The win was the Hobart Hurricanes’ second of five matches of the season, while the Stars also have two wins from five matches.

The Hobart Hurricanes move to third place in the table behind the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers. While the defeat has propelled the Stars to seventh, just ahead of crosstown rivals Melbourne Renegades.
The star is expected to welcome Adam Zampa to his match against Brisbane on Monday after the leg-spinner has been rested to spend Christmas at home.
