Archie Vaughan: The right-arm off-spinner has re-signed with the Somerset academy. Over the next few weeks, Somerset CCC will introduce you to the players who have signed for the club’s academy in 2023.
Born in Sheffield in 2005, Archie is a top-order right-handed batsman and right-arm off-spinner who has been at the Somerset academy since the summer of 2020.

When he was six he started playing club cricket for Baslow CC in Derbyshire under 9s before moving on to play for Alderley Edge where he still plays. He has also played age-group cricket for Cheshire.
During the lockdown, he started working on his off-spin bowling to give another string to his bow. He is a keen fielder whose preferred position is backward point.
“Being at the Somerset Academy has helped me tremendously with the network and the support I’ve had,” he recently said.
“The coaches film every session so you can go back and see what you did and didn’t do well. The coaches are really nice and cooperative.
“The combination of Millfield and Somerset is probably the best I could find to help my development.”
“I am on the field twice a week, apart from that I train three or four times at school. It adds up to a lot but in a good way. I also go to the gym thrice a week and do running sessions.
His top score last season was an unbeaten 78 for Alderley Edge in the Cheshire Premier League and the highlight of 2022 for Archie is playing for the Somerset Second XI.
“Playing with players like James Hildreth was a great experience for me and gave me an idea of where I want to go.
It was a big jump from Premier League cricket to playing for the Somerset Second XI but it suited me.
I like to think about the game, and when you’re batting you know you’re not going to get many freebies, so you always have to be at it, especially in four-day cricket.
“When you open the batting for the second XI, it is a constant battle with the bowler with the new ball. It’s a great challenge but I’m enjoying it.”
“I want to play as much as I can for Somerset Seconds. I want to get more experience and try to get some points.
Also, in my age group, I need to try and be a bit cockier and score more runs. I think I was too good for the bowlers!”

Archie said: “I want to make it in pro cricket and maybe have a gap year in Australia. At the moment it’s all about working on what I’m doing now and setting small goals for next season, which is after I will lead to other things.
